Ever finish work later than planned… having accomplished less than expected?
Me too. ;)
Most nights that means I am a bit more tired, move a bit slower, and likely smile a bit less. Yet, tonight, while working out of town, I left work and got to pedal to the hotel. The cycling felt like I did – tired, slow, melancholic. Yet, when I returned to the empty hotel room, I decided to go back out – to Go ByCycle.
I pedaled slowly at first. Mindlessly, my autopilot directed me back to the office – as if that’s where I wanted to go!
I re-routed along a levee – terrific for a disgruntled rider – flat, nobody around. With my brain turned off, a mile went by quickly. Then I spotted two small deer, only 30 ft below at the base of the levee.
Whether it was the deer or the rush of riding down the side of the levee, I was suddenly awake. My mind now alert, I noticed a paved pathway I had never taken. (Thanks GPS!) The map showed that it penetrated deep into a green patch, miles long! Away I went – deep into the unknown!
Daylight was almost gone, but onward I went. I saw two snakes and passed numerous people appreciating the same oasis. Compared to the 1000s stuck bumper-to-bumper on the interstate, the dichotomy was intense.
After the darkness enveloped me, I paused, smiling.
Something had changed. My plans… my plans had changed… They changed when I went back out from my hotel room, when I rode down that levee. My plans changed when I biked into the unknown.
And those decisions, each small, yet, intentional, changed me – from worn out and worn down… to smiling and satisfied.
When your plans change, I encourage YOU to change your plan.
